Hi I was hoping to move from Edgecam 2-1/2D to Inventor HSM 2017 express but so far I am finding too many things we really don't want to give up. Or maybe I am missing something. I am surprised that there isn't more intelligence between HSM and the Inventor part. With Edgecam in the drilling operation when you select a 3/8' hole, it filters out all the other drills and shows only the 3/8 drills.You don't have to go through all the drills. Or if your spot drilling it filters so you only see spot drills. Shouldn't HMS know this as well? If there is a thread you would think HMS would know what tap to pick.

I do see a lot of advantages with HSM but it seems it just hasn't matured yet. And I would gladly be corrected if I am wrong with my observations. It's surprisingly a major issue still yes. With Edgecam in roughing you can pick the part to be machined then pick what is stock, and it will machine the part, even though it is Edgecam 2-1/2D. 3D Adapative would do this. Are you looking to move to the 3D Version of the Free HSM Express? The two free express versions of HSM (Inventor and SolidWorks) 2 1/2 D do not use the solid as avoidance, they only use edges and sketches to define the toolpath, if you want the solid to be used for avoidance you have to jump to the subscription versions of HSM. Only the 3 axis versions will do this as Lauren's stated.
As for the drilling and auto picking the drill size it doesn't because HSM isn't a feature recognize CAM software, still more of a seat of your pants CAM software. If you want to see how it will work download a trial or get Fusion360 for free, all the same CAM jut different CAD side.
